Where can my inverter and battery be installed?
One of the first questions homeowners often ask is where the inverter and battery will actually go.
The good news is that modern equipment gives installers a fair amount of flexibility, and in many cases an outdoor location is the simplest option.
Can my inverter and battery go outside?
Yes. Many modern inverters and home batteries are designed for outdoor installation and have suitable weather-resistant enclosures.
A garage wall, side passage or suitable rear wall can therefore be a practical location, without taking up valuable space inside the home.
The exact position still matters. The equipment needs reasonable access for servicing, suitable ventilation and a location that meets the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
What about direct sunlight and cold weather?
Although equipment may be suitable for outdoor use, excessive direct sunlight can raise operating temperatures.
For this reason, a shaded position is often preferable, and in some installations additional shading may be required.
Cold weather is also taken into account by battery manufacturers. Modern batteries include low-temperature protection, and some models can actively warm the battery cells when temperatures fall.
The exact requirements vary between manufacturers, so the equipment specification always needs to be considered.
Can a battery be installed indoors?
Yes, but the choice of location needs more careful consideration.
Domestic battery installations are subject to fire-safety requirements, so batteries should not be positioned where they could compromise safe escape from the property. Bedrooms, sleeping areas and some locations around stairs and escape routes may therefore be unsuitable.
The construction of the surrounding area and the manufacturer’s requirements also need to be considered.
