WHY SOLAR PV MAKES SENSE FOR UK BUSINESSES

The Two Things That Matter Most

For UK businesses, solar PV typically delivers value in two main ways: self-consumption and export.

Self-Consumption:

Most businesses use electricity during daylight hours, which aligns closely with solar generation. This allows solar power to be used directly on site, reducing the amount of electricity purchased from the grid. For many businesses, this is where the majority of the financial benefit comes from.

Export:

When solar generation exceeds on-site demand, surplus electricity can be exported to the grid. While export is usually secondary to self-consumption, it can still make a meaningful contribution – particularly for businesses with seasonal or fluctuating energy use. An example of this would be in agriculture where equipment like grain drying plant is only operated for a relatively short period.

Looking Ahead: Batteries and EV Charging

Solar PV can also work extremely well alongside technologies such as battery storage and EV charging. These allow businesses to store surplus energy, shift how it’s used, or support electrified fleets — further increasing the value of a solar installation.
