Can Solar Panels Be Installed on a Shed or Outbuilding Roof?

In many cases the answer is no. Solar panels and their mounting systems add significant weight to a roof, typically around 18 kg per square metre once the panels, rails and fixings are installed. Many sheds, garages and other lightweight outbuildings were simply not designed to support this additional load safely.

However, this does not mean it is impossible. Some manufacturers of larger or more robust garden buildings publish structural load limits and may permit solar installations, provided their recommendations are followed. Timber-framed garages and substantial brick outbuildings are often better candidates than lightweight sheds.

Before considering a solar installation on any outbuilding, it is important to check:

  • The roof’s structural load capacity.
  • The condition of the roof covering and supporting timbers.
  • Any guidance or restrictions issued by the manufacturer.
  • Whether the roof orientation and shading make solar worthwhile.

If you are considering solar panels for a shed, garage or outbuilding, Stag Solar can provide an expert assessment and advise whether the roof is suitable for installation.
